If you need a phone connection, start here.
Free mobile top-ups for refugees with disabilities. The application takes about five minutes and runs through our identity-verification and anti-fraud checks. Read what to expect below, then start your application at the bottom of the page.
Who can apply
- A refugee or displaced person.
- 18 or older.
- Living with a disability.
- Holding a mobile phone number that can receive top-ups (your own, or a friend or relative’s).
This is for mobile credit only — not for handsets, SIMs, data plans, cash, or bank transfers.
Applying on someone’s behalf
You can apply for someone else — a family member, a friend you support, or a person you work with as a caseworker, NGO field worker, or support worker. The application has a branch that asks who you’re applying for and captures their details. The applicant whose phone is being topped up still needs to complete the identity check; if they can’t operate a camera themselves, you can sit with them and help.
What you’ll need before you start
- Photo ID — one of: UNHCR card, national ID, passport, asylum-seeker document. Expired IDs are accepted. If you have no ID at all, email hello@callingforhelp.org.
- The phone number you want credit on, with the country and operator.
- A device with a camera — phone or laptop — for the live selfie check.
- 5–10 minutes in a quiet place where you can show your face on camera.
What happens when you apply
When you click the apply button below, you’ll be passed into our Ai-powered identity-verification and anti-fraud process. In one short flow it does:
- Identity verification — a photo of your ID and a live selfie video confirm the document is genuine and that the person on the ID is you (face match plus liveness check).
- A short questionnaire — 30–40 questions about your situation, the disability, the phone, and how you heard about us. The Washington Group disability questions are part of this — there are no right or wrong answers.
- Sanctions screening — your name is checked against UK, UN, and EU sanctions lists.
- Anti-money-laundering (AML) checks — the standard AML checks required of regulated services. If something flags, a human reviewer takes a look. Most flags clear quickly.
- Email and phone verification — a code is sent to confirm the contact details you gave.
The verification is operated for us by didit.com, who specialise in identity verification and run their service under iBeta Level 1 and ISO 27001 security standards for handling ID and biometric data. We hold the verification result, your contact details, your application answers, and the ID and selfie material submitted as part of due diligence — read our privacy notice for what we keep, how long, and your rights.
Important: applicants must not be on UK, UN, or EU sanctions lists, and must pass AML checks. These are legal requirements that apply to anyone receiving regulated value — there’s nothing we can override.
If a check flags incorrectly, you’ll be given a chance to submit additional information for human review.
What happens after
- The verification result comes back to us — pass, fail, or needs human review.
- If it’s a pass, a caseworker reads your application and may email a follow-up question (in your language where possible).
- Median review time is under 24 hours.
- If approved, we’ll contact you via email to confirm and arrange for the credit to be sent to your phone. Make sure your email address is correct.
- If we can’t approve, we’ll tell you why so you can fix anything fixable and re-apply.
Ready to start. The next page begins the identity check — have your ID and the phone number to top up to hand.
